Some fun facts about this Collection :

  • The National Portrait Gallery, London was set up in 1856. With the objective of promoting the medium of portraiture. As well as creating awareness about the history of Britain, through art.
  • The Gallery has the largest collection of portraits in the world. Of course, not all of these can be displayed at once in the same location. Therefore, while many are displayed at the St Martin’s venue, others are on loan or exhibited elsewhere, throughout the UK.
  • The Gallery is funded by the government, as well as individuals and institutions. Sources of revenue include ticketed events, sale of merchandise and catering.
  • In addition to the vast collection of British and British-related portraiture, the Gallery is also a centre for research and learning. It houses a large archive of historic records that are accessible both online and in person.

A Final Thought

Nicholas Cullinan is the 12th and current director of the National Portrait Gallery. He says : “The National Portrait Gallery aims to be the foremost centre for the study of and research into portraiture, as well as making its work and activities of interest to as wide a range of visitors as possible.
