The art centre will not only focus on exhibitions but also art education. It is expected to feature an exhibitions space, a learning gallery, a garden as well as a restaurant. The space shall be accessible between April and October every year. French architect Luis Laplace will oversee the restructuring of the building in the time leading up to the opening of the centre. While Mar Rescalvo will take over as director in 2020.

History & Future

Hauser & Wirth was established in 1992 by Iwan Wirth, Manuela Wirth and Ursula Hauser in Zurich. The gallery has branched in  Hong Kong, London, New York, Los Angeles, Somerset, Gstaad and St. Moritz, representing over 75 artists from all over the world. Apart from curating exhibitions, the gallery is also engaged in art education through dialogue.

Following the set up and success of the Guggenheim in Bilbao, several museums, galleries and institutions have followed suite to establish new spaces in smaller cities, attracted by low costs. This phenomenon, known as the Bilbao effect, boosts local arts, culture and tourism. Whether this model is as sustainable as it is successful, only time will tell.
