A contemporary of M.F. Hussein, Biswas never truly reached the heights of fame and recognition that the former did. Biswas’s unique ability to make the canvas look complete and a work-in-progress at the same time, is astonishing. We feature him here today to catalogue that he is one of our artist’s to watch. Artistic Journey

Born in 1957 in a small village called Bharatpur near Kolkata, was trained at the University of Calcutta and Rabindra Bharati University. He was born ten years after Indian Independence, in 1957, to a new and developing country. His formal education in art began in 1978 with him enrolling in the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship and it concluded with his Teacher’s Training in Arts, Calcutta University, in 1981.It was at Rabindra Bharati University, where he studied, that he mastered a variety of different styles of art such as woodcut, linocut and etching, showcasing his versatility as an artist. The portrayal of Krishna is a recurring motif in Biswas’ work is, through whom the artist conveys concepts such as beauty, divinity, love and spirituality. Biswas is a master in the use of line and colour, which breathe life into his figures.

Why Biplab Biswas

Biswas has been a passionate artist and following his instincts for over 40 years. Passionate about his art he is one of the most sought-after artists, and he is the veteran of over 30 group shows, and his paintings are priced in lakhs. He is drawn and completely immersed in his subject – the Divine Lord Krishna, and His portrayal.

He asks himself – Who was Krishna? Was he a mystic, was He Divine? Was a lover, a musician or was he just a cowherd? And the answers flow through his paintings, that is where the answer lies. His art is the portrayal of the divine and beauty, an amalgamation of rustic charm, of spiritual conquests and divine love. His devotion to the theme, which when given colour, splashed on the white canvas comes alive with a unique vibrancy. Biplab Biswas is a master of his craft and his figures are breathtakingly life-like, the strokes move out of the physical into the ether of the canvas sharply, filling the void.

The veteran artist pursues his passion for art, and his portfolio grows from strength to strength with every passing year; but the novelty of his projections do not wear away – it is as if he began painting just yesterday – sharing with you his talent and love for Krishna.
