David Moreno is our Art Watch Artist for today. This section is brought to you by Art From Us and Divvya Nirula. The Artists we spotlight here can be from any field, across nay discipline, and using a variety of media. We share here why we think they are important and worth watching. Be it genius creators of eras gone by. Or the upcoming contemporary artist who is yet to have their first show. All come under the purview of Art Watch.
In a glance one may think that they are looking at sketches, in coloured charcoal or dry pastels. But closer inspection reveals otherwise. Using steel rods and pieces of piano wire, these bright, intricate and complex sculptures are a delight to view – in-situ. This is the mind boggling work of David Moreno. The reproductions might deceive. But the artist’s intent was just that, he says, I am – “trying to draw sculptures”.
What looks like frantic cross-hatched sketches are the huge works of Moreno. He uses hundreds of steel rods and piano wire in varying lengths to create his surreal architectural scenes. The overlapping material is welded together to mimic free-hand pencil origins, created by David as a blue-print. Hanging on gallery walls or from the ceiling. Moreno’s pieces are often lit by spotlights, an important aspect of display for him, as they create long, soft shadows that contrast with the hard vertical lines. This effect provides even greater depth to the “micro-atmospheres” he creates.
Why David Moreno?
David Moreno builds imaginary architectures in his sculptures. They are intensely compelling and to ponder on his pieces is to get lost in them. Add to the aesthetic experience, the reflective one. The crux of Moreno’s philosophy and the idea behind his architectures is his thoughts on human relationships. The bonds that are established, the interconnections formed, the flows of energy, love or power between people. For Moreno he has physically translated these visions, affiliations and fears through his lines that unite people the world over.
Each individual will find their own significance for those piano strings, flexible but strong, interconnecting the elements together, blended in harmony. As one can understand that the work is meticulous as it is rigorous. And every line is welded with a silver thread point. Dot by dot they are connected, just how human bonds are built. The titles that he chooses for his pieces guide the viewer in the interpretation. Between one and another, We go from one to another, Together or From small one to the big one, to mention just a few examples.
David Moreno is completely unafraid to chart new and explore new territories. While on the one hand, he displays the experimentation with colour, to add another dimension to his sculpture; while simultaneously, he goes a little further in the construction of imaginary spaces.
In Connection of cathedral, one of his new series ,the house disappears and in its place appears the stairs and the Romanic porticos. He has cleverly crafted this where the flexible ties are replaced by rigid steps. There can multiple interpretations to his mystical and enigmatic creations – from the mystical experience to the structures of power.
