The art of Ernesto Artillo has the capacity to shock and at the same time remind the viewer that they are looking at something that is unique and rare, that even though they are looking at bits of something or someone – they are all important as they come together as a whole.
This Andalusian artist has always been creative and he was influenced by his father making collages when he was young. He also reminisces about the time that he took painting lessons in the company of those who were much older and much different than him.
Artillo was drawn to the world of media and advertising and moreover fashion. He started to take pictures on his own when in college, he focused on fashion and advertising. It is natural that all the different concepts come together in an amalgamation.
The creation of collages is an art. It is a deliberate movement away from order, detaching from his personal tendency of keeping everything in order. For Ernesto he claims that he is given into being geometric, and he consciously tries to give into a more abstract way. He gives himself the permission to take apart pictures, and creates a new whole that he believes in.
Why Ernesto Artillo?
“It allows me to literally cut/break with things – even though they are my own pictures – to create a new order. I suppose collage makes me challenge my own conventions.” Says the artist who is constantly creating a new visual dialogue fir himself, and h=for his audience as well.
Honest about his process, he says that he finds himself dipping into fashion images to create something else with a different and personal meaning. As a result often there is a new concept that emrges that is quite different than what he had considered.
Ernesto Artillo has a wide skill base that he has nurtured and honed, and this is then mixed with his own artistic impetus. He successful draws from within his repertoire to bring together original art, fashion and photography in his stylish collages. His collages are typically fluid, showcasing a certain harmonious movement. He is partial to a colour palette that is minimal, yet inspired. The jarring is not what he aims for – shock however he doesn’t desist from.
It is not difficult to see that his works are inspired by the classic sculptures from Renaissance and Modern art, Spanish culture, music and beauty.
“I like to feel relaxed but excited when I see my work. In my personal life is very similar, I look for the balance but how to break it too,” the artist explains.
