If you have been arrested by a brooding dark image with an incredible composition. That is at once edgy, fashionable and challenging to the eyes. Chances are that you have chanced upon a Michael Ostermann image. His style of photography is completely inimitable and he creates a mood that is dark and compelling. But he is also one of the most sought-after imagists. Known for his compositions and his contribution to the world of fashion and design.
This digital and graphic artist, has been on our grid since 2011. This is when he collaborated with designer Leyre Valiente on the CHIMAERA project. Valiente, a fashion designer based in Spain and Otsermann, a graphic-artist, came together to give us CHIMAERA. They were aiming for horror. But to me the visuals have always looked like a super hero who are dressed in noir.
Why Michael Ostermann?
For the young designer from Spain – her garments were about luxury. Definitely a premium Spanish fashion brand that creates elegant avant-garde clothing inspired by Art and Science Fiction. Valiente self-confessed is a huge fan of science fiction and this is apparent in her sharp creations. They are brought to life by the chiaroscuro photography of Ostermann. He is able to cleverly draw out the real personality of the clothes.
It can be said that Ostermann has been creating’ gloomy, dark-minded and anomalous’ digital art for several years. He has created a niche for himself and a following that is dedicated to the kind of work he does. His originality and the freshness of his approach has been lauded. Ostermann certainly enjoys experimenting with surrealistic concepts. He arrives at the most perfect digital representation of the idea that he wants to present and project.
His work is suited to the projects that are different and are variable in both needs and approach. Like creating a powerful poster, he usually likes to start with a good photograph. A good concept that sets the mood for the overall image. This seems to be working for him as he creates his distinctive styles. He uses several photo-manipulation techniques, and applies self-made resources and seeing where it leads.
He has created an impressive portfolio and his body of work is highly respected. One can say that the boundary lines between fine art, digital art, fashion, and photography definitely blurr through his creations. Ostermann’s body of work – at once haunting, brooding, and ethereal, almost as if it was taken from 2050 and brought back to life in 2020, is riveting.
The artist currently lives and works in Vienna
