Art Watch : Romina Ressia

Romina Ressia is our Art Watch Artist for today. This section is brought to you by Art From Us and Divvya Nirula. The Artists we spotlight here can be from any field, across nay discipline, and using a variety of media. We share here why we think they are important and worth watching. Be it genius creators of eras gone by. Or the upcoming contemporary artist who is yet to have their first show. All come under the purview of Art Watch.

Romina began her love affair playing with the photographic image and referencing art history masters at the age of 28. Her study into Photography, Fashion Photography, Art Direction & Scenery all come together. And she created the unique modern-world-clashes-with-old-world-classicism photographic style of hers. For many her work is whimsical, touching on being humorous whilst creating dissonance. Costume, make up and props are key elements of her framing. It’s almost as though she wishes to capture an “event” for us – making us ask – is this the past or present ?

Born near Buenos Aires, in 1981, Romina knew she would make a splash in the art world one day. She started off with an education that would have taken her on a different path altogether. She was an Economics major. Her passion about art started at young age. So in her late twenties, after graduating in Economics, that she decided to dedicate her life to Photography. She devoted herself to an entirely new journey – studying photography, fashion photography, art direction and scenery in different places. Her alma mater includes the Institute of the prestigious Teatro Colon. And her influence comes mainly from Classic Paintings.

Why Romina Ressia?

“Regarding the concepts, I get inspiration from real people, the world, and some contemporary issues. In that way, I think my work has a strong sociological content . . . I like to show people’s behaviours and reactions in the modern world. Then, I present those ideas with my personal style, which is very influenced by Art.” Says Romina

Romina is particularly fond of a pictorial style of depiction. And she is well known for her anachronisms and the use of the absurd and ironic to approach modern issues. The attempt to grant a fresh air to the classic style is another important characteristics of her work. There are many who have ventured into this field. But there are few who have been successful in finding an individual identity and voice.

Artistic Journey & Process

“I am not so crazy about equipment. I shoot with my Nikon D300s and am thinking about buying a Hasselblad due to the quality of the images for big prints. However, I think that the camera is just a tool. A good photographer can make a piece of Art only with a plastic camera or even with his mobile, it is the really the eye that matters. For post- processing, I use Lightroom and Photoshop”. The hallmark of an artist who is honest to their craft. And aware of the responsibility of the artist in presenting thought.

Her works are showcased by galleries in London, Edinburgh, Switzerland, Belgium & Mykonos. She has exhibited in major cities such as New York, Milan, London, Zurich, Paris, Brussels & Buenos Aires, among many others.

Titled “Photographer of the year” by the International Color Awards 2017, among many other international prizes. And selected as one of the 17 young women who are in their way to become influential figures of the world by The Women’s Forum for the Economy and Society in 2016. This is one of the five most influential forums worldwide according to The Financial Times. Romina Ressia has won recognition fast in the Art world.
