Frieze is an iconic brand in the international art world, with a contemporary art magazine published 8 times a year and annual art fairs in both the cultural capitals of the Western world – London & New York.
Frieze : A Brief History
Frieze Art Fair was founded in London in 2003, taking its name from the iconic magazine founded by Amanda Sharp, Matthew Slotover and Tom Gidley in 1991. The art fair is dedicated to annually showcasing the latest trends, artists and works in the contemporary art market.
The Fair takes place at Regent’s Park in London and focuses on art by living artists. It features some of the most iconic galleries across the globe. The main section of the fair features both new and old commercial art galleries. The ‘Focus’ section is dedicated especially to younger galleries and emerging artist, so as to break away from the art-fair tradition of only showcasing artists who are commercially successful. The Fair’s ‘Reading Room’ allows for art-related discourse, through its curated selection of journals, books and other publications. Not limiting itself to traditional forms of art, the Fair also has a space devoted to live performance and other forms of interactive art. ‘Frieze Talks’ further offers the attendee an insight into current and relevant debates in the world of art.
An International Exhibition
In 2012, Frieze launched its New York edition which takes place in May. Frieze Masters was also launched in London the same year, coinciding with the Regents Park fair. The Masters edition is dedicated to showcasing works by iconic and historically relevant artists.
The contemporary art art fair further expanded to Los Angeles in February 2019. Apart from this, Frieze also hosts an annual summer event in London showcasing sculptural worlds by leading international artists.
